AZMACORT Aventis
AZMACORT Aventis
Drug Category: Glucocorticosteroid,
Generic Name: Triamcinolone acetonide.
Contents: Aerosol: Each actuation releases approx. 200 mcg triamcinolone acetonide; metered dose aerosol containing a microcrystatine suspension of triamcinolone acetonide in the propellant dichlorodifluoromethane and dehydrated alcohol USP 1% w/w. Total Canister contains 60mg triamcinolone acetonide; total 240 actuations.
Indications: For patients who require chronic treatment with corticosteroids for the control of the symptoms of bronchial asthma. Such patients would include those already receiving systemic corticosteroids and selected patients who are inadequately controlled on a non-steroid regimen and in whom steroid therapy has been withheld because of concern over potential adverse effects.
Dosage: Adults: The usual dosage is 2 inhalations given 3 or 4 times a day; maximum daily 16 inhalations in adults. Higher initial doses (12 to 16 inhalations per day) may be advisable in patients with more severe asthma, then adjusted downward according to the response of the patient. In some patients maintenance can be accomplished when the total daily doses is given on a twice a day schedule. Children: 6-12 years, usually one or two inhalations three or four times daily, maximum 12 inhalations; Under 6 years, not recommended.
Contra-ind: Primary treatment of status asthmaticus or other acute episodes of asthma where intensive measures are required. Not indicated for rapid relief of bronchospasm.
Precautions: Particular care in patient who are transferred from systemically active cortcosteriods. During withdrawal from oral steroids, some patients may experience symptoms of systemically active steroid withdrawal. Because of the possibility of systemic absorption of inhaled corticosteroids, observe carefully for any evidence of systemic corticosteroid effects including suppression of growth in children. In patients with decrease in adrenal function. Pregnancy. Nursing mother. Children below 6 years.
Adverse effects: Hoarseness, dry throat, irritated throat and dry mouth. Increased wheezing and cough, facial edema.
